01. An Introduction

A few pieces of narrative illustrations to accompany Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World' from last year.

I thought it was necessary to begin this blog with a little introduction and understanding post. My name is Leigh Travers and I also blog over at fashion and lifestyle blog Fox & Feather, but not a lot of people seem to know is that I'm also an illustrator and I'm currently about to undertake my final major project for the almost, kind of second time. Shamefully, I was a bit of a quitter last year and had a little melodramatic breakdown, which led to me not submitting any work for my final major project. Unfortunately I don't have much confidence in my own drawings or skill, so I tend to become stressed out and tear up the images I've put hours upon hours of work into. However, this time around I've decided to publicly document everything I create even if it would be better thrown into a furnace. My theory being that if I share my work publicly I can gain genuine critique whilst being able to look back on the development of my work over the next 6 months or so.

As of yet I have no idea what I'm focusing my FMP on, which was my problem last year. I suppose the key is to narrow it down to what subjects actually interest me. A lot of my inspiration is derives from the natural world and nature over man-made environments. I much more enjoy drawing creatures and landforms over buildings and cities. Also, a lot of my interest stems in fantasy and folklore, as I am a self-confessed bookworm who indulges in the idea of escapism in fictional worlds. Although, let's face it I need to narrow it down a lot more than that! Here we go again...
